Shark Tank Ooakshell Update

  • Entrepreneur: Mika Bertholdo
  • Business: Hand-painted headbands with adjustable rings
  • Ask: $150,000 for 10% equity
  • Result: $150,000 for 20% equity
  • Shark: Emma Grede

Entrepreneur Mika Bertholdo started her headband business Ooakshell out of her home in Houston, Texas. The stylish headbands are fully adjustable for comfort and customization.

The idea came to her when she suffered from alopecia during pregnancy and searched for a comfortable and beautiful head covering.

Ooakshell’s headbands are all hand-painted at Mika’s home. As a result, she has great margins on her sales.

The sharks are impressed when she reveals that she had $12,000 in sales during her first year in business. Even better, Ooakshell has had $386,000 in sales in the year of filming, and that’s only year-to-date sales.

The one-of-a-kind headbands sell for $35 a piece, with a very low cost of only $1.64 to make. While the margins are great, Mika does everything from making products to marketing all on her own.

She has spent no money on marketing and handles all social media and strategy, as well. Her returning customer rate is around 81%, and she caters to the same group of loyal consumers who keep coming back for more.

She came to the tank seeking production help. Her only “employee” was her husband who helps package orders.

She worked long hours to help realize her dream and needed a shark to teach her a better way.

When Mark asks how she makes 10,000 units all by herself, Mika replies that she “just doesn’t sleep.” She puts in 18-20 hours a day.

Guest Shark Emma Grede loves the product. She thinks Mika is incredible and appreciates her artistic skills.

She offers $150,000 for 20% equity immediately. Emma thinks Mika needs a shark to help guide her through the difficulties of managing the retail business.

Mika counters for 13%, but Emma explains the value she’d bring in terms of scaling a business and stands firm with her original offer.

As a result, Mika ends up accepting the original offer and happily partners with Emma.

So, what does this deal mean for Mika and her company? Find out in our Shark Tank Ooakshell update.
