After waking up with a stiff neck one morning, Susana decided it was time to look for a new pillow. Unfortunately, she just could not seem to find the right one, so she decided to ask for Kevin’s help.
One thing led to another and Pluto Pillow was founded in 2018. Using data from sleep experts, physical therapists, and of course, the consumers, Susana and Kevin sought to create the perfect pillow.
The result is a company that uses a patented algorithm to create custom hand-made pillows, based on what their customer needs and wants. They also feature a 100-night return policy.
After they present the sharks with their own custom pillows, based on each shark’s pillow preferences, the two get down to business.
According to their presentation, the return rates of their products were low, and the company has sold an increasing amount of products per year. In 2018, Pluto Pillow did $197,000 in sales.
In 2019, it was at $473,000, and halfway through 2020, Pluto Pillow is already doing $490,000 in sales. Naturally, this got the shark’s attention.
Their standard-size pillow retails for $95 and costs around $25-$30 to manufacture, plus $18 to ship. Overall, that’s about a 50% margin, which the sharks think is okay, but not great.
Following this revelation, Lori Greiner says that it is a very competitive space and drops out.
Mark Cuban also goes out but also advises the two to try and build pillows ahead of time, using previous sales and data collected.
Guest shark Daniel Lubetzky also goes out. He says that the business is not unique enough.
Next to go out is Kevin O’Leary, who states issues with the valuation.
The only one who makes an offer is Robert Herjavec, who offers $400,000 for 20% equity. He believes that the two can overcome the current problems that the business is facing.
Further, he suggests that he can help Pluto Pillow get to where they want it to go in the future. However, because of the high equity ask, Susana and Kevin declined the offer.

Despite walking away from
“We’ve been super fortunate as the product seemed to have resonated well with a national audience,” Susana told us. She continued, “After the first night, we were backordered by 6 weeks and sold over 2,000 pillows within a few hours.”
Fortunately, Susana shared that this growth continued in the following months and as they released new products. “We’re on track to hit eight figures in 2023,” Susana shared.
Further, Susana also shared that “each of our products has won a number of awards” with the pillow itself winning over ten!
With all the success, Pluto Pillow shows no signs of slowing down and Susana even teased some big plans for 2024. So we will have to follow up with her again down the line for another Pluto Pillow update!
